Chapter Sixteen

The laboratory was situated outside of Edinburgh. On leaving the city, they passed two sparkling lochs flanked by pine trees and headed through barren moors toward rising mountains. With the sky a scrubbed blue, Corey admired the Scottish scenery from the front of the van.

Rigby had been bundled into the back with Flynn and Cooper. Instead of pale he’d been red-faced, as if annoyed at his treatment.

“What do you make of Rigby?” Corey asked, directing the question at both Ben and Elijah.

Elijah took his hand from the steering wheel and made a slicing motion over his neck. “Guy has a death wish to push Cooper that way, especially down a dark alley.”

“You don’t think he would have bitten him, do you?” she asked.

“Not to kill, perhaps to scare.” Ben chuckled. “As he knows about us already and it’s not in his interest to talk, there’d be no harm in that.”

“But as Cooper said, his blood wouldn’t be particularly enjoyable. Sustenance, yes, but nothing to savor.” Elijah stroked his hand down her thigh. “Not like yours.”

“Why, what is mine like?”

“As sweet as honey, as erotic as the wildest fantasy,” Elijah said.

“And a richness that has no comparison in the animal kingdom. A flavor that is unique to you,” Ben added.

“In other words, your blood is exquisite, Corey,” Elijah said. “A few sips is all we need to have our craving for you satisfied.”

She pulled in a large breath. “And will it always be that way? Even when I’m old?”

“Yes. Your flavor won’t change,” Ben said.

“But my body will. I—”

“Corey.” Elijah squeezed her leg. “I told you, we’ll still love you and desire you when you’re an old lady.”

“But I don’t want to be an old lady.”

The two vampires shared a look.

“Guys.” She folded her arms. “You have to see it from my point of view.”

“We do,” Elijah said. “We envy your warm skin, beating heart, the need to eat and sleep and the fact you bleed.”

“But why? You have everything. You’re beautiful and strong and fast and you’re going to live forever.”

“Which isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.”

She huffed. “So you keep telling me.” She paused. “I’ll speak to Cooper and Flynn, see what they think about me becoming a vampire.”

“They’ll feel the same way we do.”

“Because if I’m a vampire you won’t be able to drink my blood? Is that all you want me for?”

Elijah took a corner too fast. He glared at her when he straightened the wheel. “How can you think that?”

“Watch the road,” she snapped.

“Corey.” Ben took her hand. “It’s you we love, your blood is a bonus, sure, but it’s you who’s stolen whatever is left of our souls and captivated us. You, not your body or your blood. We love you.”

The earnestness in his voice warmed her and in turn silenced her. They’d put up a good argument. But that didn’t stop Corey dreaming of becoming like them, and of having their strength and immortality. Plus, now she was intrigued about the taste of blood, they’d sold it as being pretty amazing if it was taken from the right person.
